Cloning is becoming an increasingly important subject in the modern world. The biggest breakthrough in cloning was when Dolly the sheep was cloned. After the success of cloning sheep, more effort was put into human cloning. The United States banned the cloning of humans, but there are other countries that have laws that are more lax on the issue of human cloning. Humans are separated from other mammals not only because of the superior intelligence but also because they have souls. A soul, "the actuating cause of an individual life" (Webster) is what makes humans what they are. The soul is the eternal essence of a person, and without it humans are no more than animals. This brings up very interesting issues on the human cloning. If clones have souls then it would not be right for humanity to create them and then use them for their own purpose, such as using them for medical transplants. However if clones do not have souls it would seem appropriate for people to use clones for their own purposes, because these clones would be no better than animals. Even if clones have no souls, this does not make the use of them in medical research immediately appropriate. God is the great creator, and many believe that human cloning is an area of life that humanity should not delve into. Certainly a clone would not have the same soul as the original, yet the very nature of the soul suggests that it cannot be created by man.

Human cloning is still in its infant stage, but the technology is progressing at a blinding rate. Originally cloning ran into a few problems with aging. When the Dolly the sheep was cloned, its cells were older than they were supposed to be. Hence Dolly has a shorter life span than other sheep. This problem was claimed to be fixed by scientists in Russia, but there is no real example of a true human clone that is being allowed to live and grow. Parents who lose their baby's in child birth, could save some of the cells in the hope that they could pay scientists to clone their baby. However if their baby was cloned, its personality would develop differently than their original child, due to different exposure. What is the point in cloning a baby who has never been born. Since there is no way of telling what the baby would have been like, why would parents spend money on the cloning? This question is impossible to answer fully without being placed in a similar situation.

In the future humans will be cloned, but it is not known how they will be treated. According to all of the biological aspects they will be living human beings, but it does not seem like humanity will treat them that way. Since it costs money to clone people it is logical to conclude that the people who pay for the clone will want some kind of return on their investment such as the use of their clone as a slave. Slaves are still a problem even in today's world. People in America often think that slavery disappeared after Lincoln abolished it. However, that is not the case; slavery has taken on a different form, although it is the same in principal. If human cloning is developed these clones could be used as slaves for life; they would not have an identity of their own. Therefore, slaves could be bought and used for whatever purpose the owner wanted. It is doubtful that they would even be able to get a citizenship from a country even if they were freed, because they could be mistaken for their cellular donor. Since clones would not be seen as humans, they could be beaten, killed, or forced into hard labor, and no one would see any problem with this. Although they may not have souls, they are still capable of the same emotions, and thoughts that other humans are. It is not hard to imagine cloning factories in third world countries that churn out clones to sell into prostitution, or bondage of some other kind. However cloning could be used in good ways such as "serving as a new, unusual but perhaps efficacious treatment for infertility" (McGee).

If humans are allowed to be cloned then doubtless these clones will bear their own children. The question is will these children have souls? Furthermore if a clone and a non-clone have a child will the child have a soul? These questions seem impossible to answer. Colin B. Donovan claims that if the processes, no matter how artificial and unnatural, result in a being that is materially human in makeup and can live and develop into a child, then that child will have a soul. The bible says the God knew each person that would be born, before the world was created. It is possible that God predestined clones to be formed as well. Sex and child birth is sacred in the eyes of God, and this fact leads to the conclusion that God does not want people to manipulate this process. Furthermore, God calls all people to inhabit the earth and subdue it. With this commandment God gave people the responsibility and permission to use animals as slaves. Many animals are slaves and yet because they have no soul and do not possess a high intelligence we do not consider them slaves. Is it only the soul that makes us human or is it just the ability to think logically? Mentally ill people do not have the ability of logical thought and yet people still consider them humans, and they have all the rights and more that other people possess. Therefore the ability does think logically is not the thing that makes us human. Clones do not have souls because they were not created by God as Adam and Eve were, but rather they were created by men.

It all comes down to the soul. Things of this earth are temporary but the soul is eternal. Clones do not have souls and so logically they could be used as slaves, just as humanity has used animals as their slaves. However this does not mean that they can be used for sex, or physically abused. The UShas laws that protect animals from abuse, and these laws would also be applied to clones.

By only knowing how to read electronic schematic diagram and testing electronic components were not enough to make us a good electronic repairers. Many faults can't be detected even if you know how to accurately test and check all the electronic components because those faults only can be detected by simply performing a voltage test. Do you know that quite a numbers of Monitor problems I have to perform a voltage test in order to locate the defective components? Yes, if without voltage testing, I might end up can't find the fault and the Monitor have to be return back to customers. What if you return many Monitors back to the same customers? Of course your business reputation would be affected and worst if your competitors (other electronic repairers) be able to repair it. You would definitely lose out the customers and is very difficult to get back his trust again about your capability to repair Monitors.

I do know lots of electronic repairers especially newbie's do not have the courage to perform the voltage test especially Computer Monitors and Television because they were afraid of the high voltage and get electrocuted. Well, if you want to work in this line and choose not to learn about voltage testing (because of afraid), then you are truly missing something that can help you to repair any equipment fast. After all, voltage testing is not that as dangerous as you thought to be. With some guidance from repair friends or even you test it on your own (practical) and protection from isolation transformer, I don't see any other reasons you don't want to do the voltage testing. Besides this of course you must know the safety guidelines first in this electronic servicing field.

The real challenging question now is even though you know how to perform the voltage testing; this does not guarantee that you will definitely being able to solve the electronic problems! As to why you can't solve the problems depends on many factors such as:

- How well you are in understanding the functions of electronic circuit (assuming I'm talking on the Monitor circuit). Some Monitors circuits can be very complicated to understand it.

- How good you are in tracing the electronic circuit (assuming you are tracing from the source to the faulty components) because many electronic repairers will lost track and can't go further to detect the fault.

- How knowledgeable you are in understanding each function of the electronic component. For example, if no signal flowing to the base of a transistor, of course there would be no current flowing between the collector and the emitter. Another example, what do you expect the output voltage will be if 100 volts is passing through between a 10 ohm resistor and a 10 k ohms resistor?

- Sometimes in order to solve a problem we accidentally create even more problems due to that we do not have the capability to hold tight the meter's probes causing it to touch on other pins while measuring a components (says is an IC or a transistor). This would cause the whole equipment to shutdown or even burnt the components. How many of you have done that before?

- We must also know what the range of the meter setting is in order to test the electronic circuit accurately. For example, would you test the secondary output voltages when your meter is set to AC range? Or would you expect a reading when your meter's red probe touches on a cold ground?

From above, these are the things that you should know if you want to be successfully able to perform a voltage test on any equipment. It is not that easy to absorb everything that I've just mentioned above but if you have the passion to do it (I mean learn everything from reading electronics books, visiting forum, doing your own practical test and etc) then you are giving yourself a chance to learn something that will truly benefit to you.

In this week's article I'm going to show you how by performing a voltage test has helped me to solve an unusual problem in a Computer Monitor.

Well, this monitor with the brand name of MIMOS (this is an OEM Monitor) came in with the complaint of can't adjust horizontal size (there's totally no changes when the horizontal size control was pressed). The display width (size) was large and both sides of the display curved inward (pincushion out). For your information, the horizontal size and pincushion circuit were located in the same area and both circuits were working together in order to achieve a desire display. If one component in a circuit fails, it would affect another circuit as well! That's why, when the horizontal size circuit have problem, the pincushion circuitry was affected too (the display curved inward).

Normally when I see this kind of problem, I would usually check and test all the components in the horizontal size and pincushion circuits' area with my ESR, analog and digital meter. Most of the time, I could solve the problem fast. The common faulty parts for horizontal size width problem in a Monitor were usually dry joints, shorted modulation diode and pincushion transistor and capacitor opens along the horizontal size coil's line. But somehow I could not locate the faulty components in this Monitor because all of the components that I've checked were all tested okay!

Since I have checked all the components in the horizontal size and pincushion circuit area to be okay, now the only way to solve it is through using voltage test. Generally, whenever if you want to perform voltage testing, one must start from the source first. However if you are experience enough you can always skip some section and start tracing the circuit that you think would fail. As there are many electronic repair newbie's in this ERG member site, I would show all of you how to trace from the source first.

Now think carefully, what makes the display to become small or big whenever the horizontal size control was pressed through the On Screen Display (OSD)? There must be a signal sends out from somewhere to the horizontal size circuit in order to control the display. Am I right? The pincushion transistor has a base pin and if this voltage varies (because of the horizontal size control either set to minimum or maximum) the display will change too. You can choose to trace backward starts from the base pin of the pincushion transistor or start from the source. I will guide you to trace from the source because once you know how to trace from the source, you would be able to troubleshoot and repair other Monitor problems too such as can't control the brightness, contrast, vertical and horizontal height. You may use this method that I'm about to show you in TV and other electronic equipment as well.

First you must understand what is the function of digital to analog conversion (DAC) circuit. Since most of the modern Monitors are using digital signal (communication between the CPU and EEPROM and other circuits as well) there must be some circuit to convert the digital signal to analog signal in order to drive the pincushion transistor and others electronic circuits too. Our normal multimeter can't measure digital signal, it can only read analog signal. Older Monitors have the DAC IC located out site the CPU (such as the TDA8444 IC used in NEC XV 14 Monitor) while for modern Monitors the DAC IC is built into the CPU. I guess you are now understood why a digital circuit needs a DAC as part of it complete circuit. In other words, the DAC is required to communicate with the analog world!

In this faulty Monitor, I don't see any DAC IC nearby the CPU so I presumed that the DAC was already built into the CPU. Now, this is the most challenging part where you have to carefully adjust the Monitor position and yourself so that when the Monitor power is switch "ON" you can perform the voltage test on all the pins at the CPU. Assuming you have taken all the necessary safety and precautions now is the time to switch on the Monitor and start to do voltage testing.

After you got hold of the Monitor, select the horizontal size control through the OSD screen. You could see when the "+" and "-" buttons was pressed at the front panel, the number in the OSD display indicates the minimum and maximum value representing the size of the display being adjusted. Since this is a faulty Monitor, although the number in the OSD screen is changing (because you are pressing the "+" and "-") there is no effect on the display and the display remains big and curved. But somehow you could measure the pins at the CPU to locate which one of the pins the voltage is changing when the adjustment button is press! Try one by one of the CPU pins until you saw one that has effect when the horizontal size control was pressed. The voltage is about 0 to 5 volts (depends on the design of Monitors) and should go up or down momentarily when the horizontal size adjustment is changing. Congratulation! You are now have determined the source of the horizontal size circuit. One word of advice, a defective CPU or a corrupted EEPROM data could cause no signal at the horizontal size source pin!

Once you have known the pin then it is relatively easy to find out the fault. Start tracing from the pin and see at where the voltage had missing as shown in this photo. Surprisingly the voltage remains okay even till pin 5 (inverting input) of the quad operational amplifier LM324 IC. Since this is an OP-AMP IC, it requires two inputs (inverting and non-inverting input) to produce an output at pin 7 but the voltage at pin 7 would not vary. And if this output won't vary definitely it can't control the horizontal size. Pin 5 voltage of the LM324 IC varies and pin 7 don't varies then most probably the problem is either in the IC itself or components that are related to pin 6 (non-inverting input). I saw a wire coming from top of the board and upon inspecting it; it was from B+ voltage (about 66 VDC) and passing through a resistor before reaching pin 6 of the OP-AMP IC. Using my analog meter to measure across the high ohms resistor (820k), I found it to be zero voltage. In order to really confirm is the resistor fault, I desoldered one of the lead and check with my ohmmeter. Guess what? The resistor has open circuit! Unbelievable and it was true! Replacing with a new resistor restored the display back to normal.

Conclusion- Imagine if I didn't use the voltage testing method, I don't know how long that I'm going to spend on troubleshooting this kind of problem. And worst still, I may end up can't solve the problem and return the Monitor back to my customer. With constant learning and practice in electronic repair you will have no problem in tackling any electronic faults in the future. Just don't give up and continue to learn from the ERG member's page. Once you have built solar panels, it is necessary to check them to see that they are in working order before you can start using the panels. You need a meter known as an "amp meter to test solar panels. An amp meter has to be connected to the negative and positive part of the solar power panel and then the panel is activated to carry out the test. The meter measures using a measurement termed the "short circuit current", which is the quantity of current that the panels can generate. How To Repair Dell E152Fpb LCD Monitor

The complaint for this DELL E152Fpb LCD Monitor was when switched on has power (LED lit) but no display. LCD Monitor is different from the CRT Monitor where you could feel the static at the front of the picture tube or hear the rushing sound from the high voltage produced by the flyback transformer. In LCD, if no display you won't be able to know if the inverter board is working or not unless you use an oscilloscope to point near the inverter board and the scope could display a waveform indicating the inverter board is functioning.

A faulty main board may cause no display problem in LCD Monitor. If there is a problem in the main board, it would not send a "on" (enable) signal to the soft start circuit and no voltage will flow to the inverter IC thus no waveform produce by the high voltage transformer.

In the above case, after the cover was removed, the first thing I check was the vcc (supply voltage) to the inverter IC. This model is using the famous TL1451ACN Pulse width modulation (PWM) IC-some preferred to call it as inverter IC. Pin 9 is the VCC supply input and it should have about 12 Volts when the power is "on". Measuring the pin with my faithful digital multimeter, it reads only about 3 volts which indicates there's a problem in the supply line. It could be components that are faulty that dragged down the line or it could be the switch mode power supply itself that don't produce enough power.

In order to find the answer as which section is giving problem, the first clue was that the power LED indicator lit and this prove that the IC is supplying enough power to the circuit. Another clue was that the meter is registering about 16 volts at the input of the 2A fuse. Because of these clear answers, we can conclude that the switch mode power supply is working fine. You can also use a 12 volt light bulb to confirm it. You may read my other post on LCD Monitor repair articles which talks about using 12 volt light bulb for troubleshooting purposes.

I kept on asking myself, why the voltage drop to 3 volts after the fuse. Before the fuse it reads about 16 volt but after the fuse it reads only 3 volts! I didn't suspect the fuse, because the fuse can only either yes or no and no in between. The first circuit that I checked was the start circuit but all components checked to be okay. I even desoldered the pin 9 of TL1451ACN inverter IC just to make sure it is not this IC that pulled down the voltage.

This problem really challenges my troubleshooting and repairing skill, because almost all suspected components already checked to be working. Even the start circuit transistors (C945 & A733) I direct replaced, afraid they would breakdown when under load. The only component that I didn't check was the fuse! By using my meter placed across the fuse, instead of getting low ohms or zero ohm reading I got 1.012 Kilo ohms! I've got a surprised and don't believe that a fuse can actually go into high ohms instead of open circuit. I always thought that a fuse is either close or open circuit. A fuse with zero ohms turned into high ohm thus the 16 volts dropped to 3 volts! I've came across lots of this type of fuse but this is the first time a fuse changed into high resistance.

Replacing the fuse only put the DELL E152Fpb LCD Monitor back to life. The lesson learned from here is that don't assume that a component is always in a good working condition. You have to confirm it with your meter and if you still suspect the component is giving problem, simply replace it with a known good one and retest the equipment. Semiconductors can breakdown when under full operating voltage.

I have come across a lot of car stereo systems over the past 10 years or so. There are so many "techniques" to installing head units. Everyone has their own opinion of what is right and wrong when wiring up a system, but just because it works doesn't make it right.

I asked Majestic Modifications what their opinion was on the subject. How do they install so many units and always get it right?

First, if applicable, always use the harnesses. The aftermarket wiring harness will usually take the guesswork out of the installation. These harnesses attach to the vehicle's factory wiring harness and gives you a color coded installation. You just attach red to red, yellow to yellow, etc. But is that all an installer should know?

Starting with your digital multimeter, find the power sources in the harness. One source will be continuous 12 volts, the other will be the ACC (ignition) 12 volts. These two will go with the yellow and red wires from the aftermarket head unit's harness. They are labeled accordingly. It is usually a good idea to attach the ground wire to the frame of the dash. A lot of head units come with a connector for this already attached to the ground wire. Secure these in place with some solder and shrink tubing. Slip the shrink tubing over one of the wires to be connected and move it out of the way. Connect the wires and dab a little solder on the wires. Let cool and then slide the heat shrink tubing over the connection. Heat with a heat gun/hair dryer to shrink the tubing to fit.

You can try to look on the internet for the wiring colors, but good luck. They will tell you the "typical" wire colors, but chances are it will be different. You can try two techniques to find the right wires. Clip the rest of the wires from the factory harness. You can test the speakers with a good 9 volt battery to see which speakers are which. Two wires connected to the same speaker will make it pop. Note which speaker makes the pop and attach it to that speakers wiring from the head unit. I like to turn the unit on and make sure the wires are the right polarity. A reverse wired speaker will not have as good a sound as a properly wired one. Continue the technique until all the speakers are connected.

The other way you can trace the speakers down is to turn on the head unit, but be VERY careful to not cross any wires. Start with a pair of wires, and attach them one at a time until you get sound. Note which speaker it is and attach it to that speaker's wires from the wiring harness, taking not of polarity. Continue until all the wires are in place. Zip tie the wire together and neatly tuck them behind the head unit.

Be sure you have a good ground wire connection. Be sure that RCAs or signal wires are running away from any power wires or sources, and are not run parallel to them.

If you want a neat trick, you can attach the 12 volt acc to the illumination wire, and you will be able to turn the unit on with your parking light switch. Take note, that anytime the unit is on, the dash panel lights will be on too, but you won't notice them in the daytime. The illumination wire is used to turn the factory radio lights on at night.

Not having the wiring harness for your vehicle is not a do or die situation. If you can get the harnesses, save the hassle and time and use it. If you find yourself in a bind, then follow the steps above and get it installed correctly.

4) Do not carry your passwords and PINs in your purse or wallet. If you do need to carry passwords and PINs for any reason you can put them on a flash drive, in your cell phone, or digital personal organizer as long as it is password protected and/or encrypted

5) Create strong passwords and PINs. Passwords should be 8 or more characters in length using a combination of upper and lower letters, numbers, and special characters.

6) Opt for paperless e-statements from your bank, credit card issuer, and other financial companies and creditors. If the statement not in the mail, then it's not available for a thief to steal either.

7) Shred, Shred, Shred. One of the most effective ways to stop the loss of personal information is to shred all documents with your name or other identifying information on it. Documents you must shred include bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, receipts, utility bills, phone bills, etc. A good rule of thumb is this: if it has your name on it, don't throw it in the trash - shred it!

As the first step, you should locate the multimeter on the setting of the ohmmeter in order to test the resistor. The setting is commonly indicated by the letter Greek omega. If you already know the resistor, you can choose the setting which is equal to or higher than it. Meanwhile, if you do not know the value, you can choose the lowest setting.

I turn on my laptop and it loads to the login screen. I have Windows XP Professional and the laptop is a Satelite M35X-S109 from Toshiba. When I login about less than 1 minute the computer freezes. I tried to turn the computer on and off, but it frezzes. I think I had somthing to do when i downloaded virus protection from sbc dsl.

Try rebooting and using "Safe Mode", this is accessible by pressing the F8 key repeatedly before Windows starts to load (you know you have it right when a menu pops up that asks if you want to load windows or run in safe mode along with a few other options), choose Safe Mode (not safe mode command prompt only or safe mode with Networking Support). The touch pad (or trackball) will probably not work and the screen will look funny. Go into the control panel and remove that software and reboot. That may fix it, if not while in safe mode run system restore (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore) and choose a date prior to installing that software.

I own a Sony Vaio Laptop and I am having CD drive problems. I insert a CD and now it doesn't recognise it being inserted on the computer. Have tried multiple CDs, checked My Computer numerous times and still nothing.

You've probably been told already, but a CD lens cleaner can work wonders. You might also try a blast of Spray air in the side. If there's a hair or dust on the lens it will not be able to "see" the Disc. Other than this, the laser may be out of alignment.

The screen display has turned from landscape to portrait and I am having to turn my head to wiew the screen.

Sounds like the display settings got changed. Right click an empty spot on your desktop and choose properties from the menu that opens. This will open the display properties window. Somewhere in there should be a setting for screen rotation or similar worded setting that will allow you to change the orientation.

I have a Gateway laptop that's just barely a year old. The other day, I went to turn it on, and nothing happened! It was working fine prior to that day. Someone said that it could be a surge problem. Any ideas?

You could try to remove the battery and try getting it to work on AC power alone. If that works then try plugging the battery in and turning it back on. If it doesn't work with the battery and works without it then I suspect the battery may be defective. Modern laptop batteries have circuits inside to tell the computer how much charge they have. Batteries are the weakest link on all notebooks. If it doesn't work even on AC power with no battery, then get a multimeter and check the output of the adapter and compare it with the specs printed on it. It should be no lower than .1 volts from the specified range, for example, if it says 14.2 volts and you measure 13.5 then there is a good change it's bad.
